W H Wellbeloved are a firm of family butchers
operating in Deptford, SE London continuously since 1829. Operating for years
out of a rare, and Listed, late C17th terraced cottage in nearby Tanners Hill, they had previously been located on
Deptford High Street in much larger premises. Those premises are now a Chinese
restaurant, but the yard behind, where slaughtered cattle would have been
brought from the 'Foreign Cattle Market' half a mile away by the River Thames
on the site of what was once Henry VIII's Royal Dockyard, established in 1513,
still belongs to the Wellbeloved family. Having previously worked with the
family on ways to restore the C17th cottage, Oval Partnership are now exploring
options for sensitively redeveloping the yard in keeping with its rich local
history.
