Project | Jupiter street improvement works |
Brief | creation of a shared street |
Date | 2013-ongoing |
Location | Causeway Bay, Hong Kong |
Jupiter Street, in the Causeway Bay area of Hong Kong, has been designed as a shared surface street with pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles all sharing the same surface without kerbs or barriers to separate them, using a change in paving to mark a change in zones and raised areas to control traffic speeds. This approach to ‘de-cluttering’ the urban environment has been successfully trialled in a number of European cities.
Existing market stalls will be re-housed in newly designed street kiosks, and street trees, planters, and places to sit are further added to enrich the street environment. The improvements will enhance retail opportunities for local small businesses and improve the quality of life for residents in the towers above the shops and visitors.
