Date2022 LocationSydenham, London SE26We have successfully gained planning consent for this&nbsp; one-off, new-build, low-energy timber-framed and timber-clad, two-storey eco-house in very close proximity to a row of existing mature trees and hedgerow shrubs on a suburban site that was once a narrow lane, now closed off and subject to fly tipping. The aim is to retain all the trees, which are so close to the proposed dwelling that we commisioned a point-cloud laser scan of them so that we could precisley adjust our design to fit. The building exterior is clad with timber shingles as a rain screen over an impervious waterproof membrane beneath. The intention is that the timber cladding will act as a long-term ‘sacrificial surface’, supporting mosses and lichens. The entire building is built off a steel deck suppported on mini-piles to protect the tree roots. Rain water collected from the roofs will be redistributed back under the building. &nbsp; We see the project as a case study in the light of London Plan requirements on the one hand to protect and enhance site biodiversity whilst on the other to maximise the efficient use of land in an era of housing shortage. The trees (which run along the southern boundary) also provide much needed summer solar shading, increasingly critical as temperatures rise and buildings become more highly insulated. &nbsp; We wanted to design a house that facilitated and celebrated the experience of living in such close proximity to trees and other hedgerow plants. Conceptually the aim is to create within the house a journey through trees, responding specifically to the different tree species and other vegetation and their individual characteristics as one moves through the house. Glimpses of the trees outside, filtered sunlight with shadowy silhouettes of vegetation through translucent screens, timber lining of interiors and a blurring of internal and external planting will all help to reinforce this experience. The roofs are designed so that the textures and habitat of the roof surfaces are visible to occupants, creating a variegated rhythm and horizon when the building is viewed from a distance and bringing daylight and sunlight into the house along its east-west axis. The approach to the house involves a sequence of thresholds (the outermost being restored Edwardian Gothic brick piers that mark the lane entrance). The trip was to Pulau Ubin and Lorong Buangkok — the two earliest settlements in Singapore, and now the last two surviving kampongs, currently at a crossroads between development and conservation. Visitor centre and landscape master plan on disused colliery site Brief Competition Entry Date2012 Location Cronton, England Our entry for an RIBA national competition, made in collaboration with our affiliate practice in Liverpool, Brock Carmichael Architects. Located on the former site of Cronton Colliery, the competition calls for a self-sufficient attraction for local and regional visitors to help regenerate the area. We proposed a Sensory Garden for the 21st century, an inclusive place for the whole community of Knowsley and beyond; A garden for the arts, science, ecology and industrial heritage; A garden to foster community cohesion through ecological regeneration. The primary elements included a community building with an organic bar and restaurant; cultivated gardens and interpretive material mapping the footprints of the original colliery buildings; wild, natural areas, and an outdoor amphitheatre for theatre and solar-powered cinema. As well as a human movement network, the rail network across the UK is a diverse habitat network. The 2018 government commissioned Varley Report looked at how Network Rail's approach to vegetation management could meet safety requirements whilst also ensuring protection and, where possible enhancement of this valuable asset. The report was commissioned as a result of public outcry at excessive tree felling and a perceived lack of consideration for environmental impact and biodiversity across parts of the network. We believe rail transport can work hand in hand with active travel modes to provide more sustainable alternatives to car use, particularly in the provision of efficient and sustainable access to nature. The value of small rail stations should go beyond their role as mere boarding points in a movement network. They have the potential to become sustainable social community hubs, centres of ecological interpretation and information exchange.&nbsp; With these thoughts in mind our proposal for the design of new small stations explores the extent to which the continuity of track-side habitat can be maintained through the station itself and looks at alternatives to the increasingly prevalent single gate-line stations, the resu;t of shortsighted operational cost-cutting measures that can sever communities. Our proposal for an Open Station Design will improve pedestrian access, making stations attractive locations for a wider range of shops, services and community facilities. Chang, Foster and Partners, Hidden Agenda, HK Honey, HK Farm, Oval Partnership, Rocco Design, Ronald Liu and Partners, Eric Schuldenfrei David Chipperfield chose his title for the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale, Common Ground, for its double meaning: shared ideas / shared territory. He hoped to reconnect architects, both to each other and to the wider public and to expand the debate on how we jointly shape our shared built environment. In Hong Kong this double meaning has added poignancy. The phrase ‘one country, two systems’ is a maxim constantly under interrogation. To what extent does Hong Kong retain a different system, and how does this different system envisage the involvement of its citizens in shaping their future? We chose to explore these questions in the context of the regeneration of South East Kowloon, the redevelopment of which became feasible following the departure of Kai Tak Airport in 1998, and has been the subject of heated debate ever since. The exhibition aimed to recreate the complex, partial, fragmented experience of passing through a city full of competing voices and spaces. As curators we became ghostwriters, threading stories from past, present and future through real and speculative propositions for the South East Kowloon development area and beyond: cutting and pasting, juxtaposing and re-contextualising, time-shifting. We saw this as a way of conjuring memory and individual experience into an abstract master plan, as a way of furthering local debate and dialogue and as a way of evoking the past whilst celebrating the unofficial, ad hoc re-inhabitation of this rapidly changing area. Successful cities are permissive, embracing a spirit of multiplicity and difference, of subversion and invention. Without the underground, the semi-legal and the anti-authoritarian, cities become sterile and predictable. Biologically dead. Our exhibition presents some of the official, large-scale new uses proposed for South East Kowloon, and the unofficial, unplanned, locally generated activities that occupy the cracks and crevices in between. These, with a little water, might flower into a rich meadow. &nbsp;
